Looking to the future with CSI’s first trainee program

For Mineral Resources (MRL), developing tomorrow’s generation of mining talent starts today.

It’s a sentiment echoed by our wholly-owned subsidiary, CSI Mining Services (CSI), which recently welcomed eight of our newest employees to its first Operator Trainee Program.

CSI provides crushing, screening and processing solutions for some of the world’s largest mining companies and continues to strengthen its reputation as the global leader in specialist mining services.

With our future success guided by the next generation of mining professionals, we’re proud to invest in entry-level programs supporting new talent to kick-start their career with one of Australia’s leading mining companies.

Building knowledge, skills and confidence

CSI’s Operator Trainee Program equips participants with the industry knowledge and practical skills to make positive contributions in operational roles across our range of services and locations.

The 12-month program starts with an in-depth two-week induction period, which this year included valuable time on site at MRL’s Mount Marion lithium operations where trainees experience firsthand the size and scope of CSI’s services.

Trainees spend the next year building their practical skills and experience across operational roles, which will also see each participant earn a Cert III Resource Processing qualification.

This year’s program will see six trainees stationed at Mount Marion, while two will support the business’ iron ore operations in Koolyanobbing.

Fostering the next generation of talent

CSI Executive General Manager, Jason O’Rourke, said the Operator Trainee Program was a great example of the business looking for new ways to build career pathways.

“It’s important we continue looking for opportunities to recruit and develop the next generation of employees, be it those new to the resources industry or others starting a new chapter in their mining career,” O’Rourke said.

“Our Operator Trainee Program is about more than just the here and now; it also involves working closely with our employees to map a personalised development plan that can set them up for a long and successful career.”

Starting a new professional journey

For trainee Maddie Wilson, the prospect of starting her career in mining offered a mix of excitement and nerves – but she already feels she’s made the right decision joining the CSI program.

“I was quite nervous coming in, but as soon as we got here everyone was so welcoming which made me feel really comfortable. It’s even better than I expected and I’m excited to be working on site,” Wilson said.

“I just want to learn as much as I can and hopefully branch out and try new areas – there’s plenty of opportunity move around.”

We’re also pleased to see 75% of CSI’s Operator Trainee Program participants are women, supporting our efforts to encourage diversity through initiatives that attract, develop and retain women across all roles, levels and locations.

It’s a focus complemented by our membership with NAWO – Australia’s peak body championing women in operations – helping us have conversations and actions that encourage greater gender balance across our business and the broader mining industry.
